Anna Chakvedatze struggled past Francesca Schiavone 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the opening singles match Saturday to give Russia a 1-0 lead over defending champion Italy in the Fed Cup final. Anna had to lose set to clinch the victory in the third set. Svetlana Kuznetsova was scheduled to take on Italy's Mara Santangelo in the second singles match.
