Nobody knows for sure how many threats are out there, in "the wild", how many viruses, worms and Trojans infect computers all around the world, but what we do know is that there sure are many! I’ve decided to write about this after I’ve seen a few pieces of news on Anchiva’s website. Back in July this year, their network of honey pots and web crawlers had a total database of 750.000 threats. This is huge, considering that for a threat to hit a honey pot, it needs to be active, so "dead" viruses don’t count. In addition, this week, their database reached the milestone of 1.000.000 signatures. In my opinion, this is a very large number, considering the way these have been gathered.
Surely, we are facing 25 years of virus activity now, but the recent number of threats and how things have escalated could have never been predicted. "Our threat database has grown at a very rapid pace over the last two months, indicating that Web-borne malware threats are growing exponentially," said Samuel Chen, Chief Technology Officer of Anchiva Systems. "Our Rapid RX labs is continuously finding new and emerging threats while protecting from older threats that still infect the networks."
