England's remarkable rennaissance in the Rugby World Cup 2007 continued , as Brian Ashton's men reached the finals with an unexpected 14-9 victory over hosts France at the Stade de France. A Josh Lewsey try and nine points from the boot of Jonny Wilkinson gave the reigning champions the edge over the french who could not breach the English try-line. France had just three penalties from Lionel Beauxis to show for their greater possession. England had beaten France in 2003 on their way to lifting the Webb Ellis Trophy in Sydney.
