Germany beat Brazil 2-0 to win the Women's World Cup in Shanghai to become the first nation to retain the trophy. It was a goalless first half but Captain Birgit Prinz broke the deadlock at the 52nd minute. Brazil hit the post twice and World Player of the Year and golden shoe winner in this tournament, Marta had a penalty saved by Nadine Angerer Simone Laudehr headed the second goal four minutes from the end. Germany’s victory follows their 2003 triumph over Sweden in Los Angeles.
